How to Choose a Greenhouse

A greenhouse should fit the growing space you need, the conditions at the installation site and the time you can give to ventilation and maintenance. Compare the complete structure—not just its outside dimensions—before choosing a kit.

1. Choose a practical footprint

Think about the plants you want to grow, the number of shelves or benches you need, and the room required to move around inside. Check the external width and length, but also review the internal usable area, door opening, side-wall height and roof height. Leave space around the greenhouse for assembly, access and maintenance.

2. Compare frame materials

Greenhouse frames may use aluminum, steel, cedar or other materials. Compare the exact frame material and finish in each listing. Consider corrosion resistance, weight, maintenance, appearance and the way the panels attach to the frame. A wooden greenhouse can offer a natural appearance, while metal frames can offer a different balance of weight and upkeep.

3. Understand the panels

Listings may describe clear, twin-wall, multi-wall or other polycarbonate panels. Panel construction affects light transmission, insulation, durability and overall appearance. Do not assume that all greenhouse panels perform alike: check the product’s panel type, thickness, UV treatment and warranty information where provided.

4. Plan ventilation and temperature management

Ventilation helps manage heat and humidity. Check whether the kit includes roof vents, side vents, louvres, doors or an automatic vent opener. The number and position of openings matter, and the right setup depends on the climate, sun exposure and plants you intend to grow. You may need to open or close vents as conditions change.

5. Prepare the site before delivery

  • Choose a reasonably level site with suitable sunlight for your intended plants.
  • Plan a stable base that matches the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
  • Check drainage so water does not collect around the structure.
  • Confirm access for delivery, unloading and assembly.
  • Review local wind, snow and building requirements before installation.
