What Size Metal Garage Do You Need? Measure Vehicles, Doors and Storage
Choosing a metal garage size starts with the items you plan to store, but the vehicle’s dimensions are only the beginning. You also need room to open doors, walk around equipment, reach shelves and move larger items in and out.
Measure more than vehicle length
Record the vehicle’s overall length, width and height, including mirrors, roof racks and accessories. Add room for opening doors and walking around it. If you store a mower, ATV, trailer or workshop equipment, measure those items too and consider how they will be moved.
Check door openings and roof clearance
The garage’s outside dimensions do not equal its usable interior space. Check the clear opening dimensions, wall framing, roof structure and any low points. A tall vehicle may need additional clearance for roof accessories or a raised door.
Plan the site footprint
- Confirm property boundaries and required setbacks
- Allow space for doors to open and vehicles to turn
- Plan drainage around the structure
- Check delivery and installation access
- Verify local permits, foundation and anchoring requirements
Do not rely on a product title alone for engineering ratings or usable interior dimensions. Review the exact manufacturer’s drawings and installation documents. For a comparison point, see the Arrow 20 x 24 shelter listing and other options in the garages and carports collection.
Think about future use
If you may add shelves, a workbench or another vehicle later, plan that space now. Our garage and carport buying guide compares the factors to check before selecting a structure.
