Polycarbonate vs. Greenhouse Film: Understanding Covering Options

A greenhouse covering affects light, heat management, durability and maintenance. Rigid polycarbonate panels and flexible polyethylene film are common options, but they are used in different structure designs and should not be compared by price alone.

Rigid polycarbonate panels

Polycarbonate panels are rigid sheets used on framed greenhouse kits. Twin-wall or multi-wall designs contain internal air spaces that can influence insulation and light diffusion. Panel thickness, UV protection, frame design and manufacturer warranty vary, so read the specifications for the exact greenhouse.

Flexible polyethylene film

Greenhouse film is a flexible covering commonly tensioned over a frame. It can be economical for larger tunnel-style structures, but its useful life depends on film grade, UV treatment, installation tension, weather exposure and maintenance. Replacement planning should be part of the ownership cost.

Questions to compare

  • Is the covering rigid panel or flexible film?
  • What light transmission or diffusion information does the manufacturer provide?
  • Is UV protection specified for the intended side and use?
  • How are panels or film secured and replaced?
  • What wind, snow and installation conditions does the structure permit?

Armley carries panel-style greenhouse kits such as the Canopia Mythos twin-wall greenhouse and Canopia Glory multi-wall greenhouse. Check the current listing for panel material, dimensions and included components.

Choose the complete structure

Covering material is only one part of the decision. Compare frame, anchoring, ventilation, base requirements and available replacement parts.
