Winter Equipment Storage: How to Prepare a Snow Blower Between Seasons

Toro Power Max HD two-stage gas snow blower

Storing a snow blower correctly between seasons helps protect the equipment and makes the next winter start-up easier. Gas and battery models have different requirements, so always follow the operator’s manual for the exact machine and battery system.

Start with the owner’s manual

Storage procedures vary by engine, fuel system, battery chemistry and model design. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for fuel treatment, oil changes, battery removal, charging and storage temperature. Do not apply a procedure intended for one model to another without checking compatibility.

Clean the machine safely

Switch the machine off and wait until all moving parts stop. Disconnect the battery or power source where applicable and follow the manual before cleaning. Remove snow, salt and debris from accessible exterior areas using the recommended method. Never put hands into the auger or discharge chute.

Gas snow blower storage

Gasoline can deteriorate during storage. The manufacturer may recommend draining the fuel system or using an approved stabilizer, depending on the model and expected storage period. Refuel and service only in a safe, well-ventilated outdoor area, with the engine stopped and cool. Store fuel only in approved containers and away from ignition sources.

Battery snow blower storage

For battery models, follow the battery manufacturer’s instructions for charge level, storage temperature and whether the battery should be removed from the machine. Avoid storing packs in extreme heat, extreme cold or damp locations. Use only the charger specified for the battery system.

Inspect wear items before putting equipment away

  • Check the auger, scraper, skid shoes and chute for visible wear or damage.
  • Inspect tires, tracks, cables, handles and fasteners.
  • Check that safety controls and switches operate correctly.
  • Note any repair or replacement parts needed before the next winter.
  • Store manuals and model information where they can be found.

Choose a suitable storage location

Store equipment in a dry, secure location away from children and ignition sources. Keep gas-powered equipment away from living spaces and never run an engine in an enclosed area. Protect batteries and chargers according to their safety instructions.

Prepare for the next season

Before the first snowfall, inspect the machine again, check fuel or battery condition, verify tire pressure where applicable and test controls according to the operator’s manual. If the machine needs service, use a qualified technician or the manufacturer’s authorized service network.
