Trailer GVWR, Payload and Empty Weight: What Buyers Should Know
Trailer specifications can look confusing when you are comparing models. GVWR, empty weight and payload describe different things, and understanding the difference helps prevent choosing a trailer that is too small or unsuitable for the tow vehicle.
What GVWR means
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the maximum loaded weight rating assigned to the trailer by its manufacturer. It is a rating, not the trailer’s current weight and not the amount of cargo you can automatically carry.
What empty weight means
Empty or unloaded weight describes the trailer without the cargo you plan to carry. The actual empty weight can vary with options, accessories and configuration. Use the exact product documentation or manufacturer’s specification for the trailer you are considering.
How payload is estimated
A basic estimate of available payload is GVWR minus the actual empty weight. For example, if a trailer has a 7,000 lb GVWR and its actual empty weight is 2,500 lb, the arithmetic difference is 4,500 lb. This is an illustration only, not a specification for any Armley product. The actual payload must also account for installed accessories and any other manufacturer limits.
The tow vehicle has its own limits
The trailer rating does not tell you what your vehicle can tow. Check the tow vehicle owner’s manual, door-jamb certification label, hitch rating, receiver, ball mount and coupler. The loaded vehicle and trailer combination must remain within all applicable vehicle, axle, tire, hitch and combination ratings. NHTSA’s guidance and vehicle-specific manuals should be used when evaluating towing limits.
For additional context, see NHTSA’s trailer safety interpretation, which discusses checking trailer certification information and the hauling capacity of the complete tow system.
Do not overlook tongue weight and load distribution
Tongue weight is the downward force placed on the hitch by a conventional trailer. The correct range depends on the trailer and hitch design, and must be checked against the vehicle and trailer manufacturer’s instructions. Poor load distribution can affect stability. Do not use a generic percentage as a substitute for the ratings and loading guidance for your specific combination.
Compare the trailer type with the cargo
Utility, dump, enclosed cargo, equipment and motorcycle trailers have different deck layouts and loading needs. Compare deck length and width, axle ratings, brakes, ramps, sides, tie-down points and the intended cargo.
